Southwest Public Schools board adopts broad policy updates, tables prekindergarten policy

The minutes record the vote as ayes from Duane Teter, Jennifer McConville, Jason Kloepping and Brooke Brooks and no nays; the motion carried.
A second motion approved an additional package of revised policies covering complaint procedure (2006), meetings (2008), public participation (2009), smoking and related products (3016), official communication with the public (3017), nondiscrimination (3053), employee leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (4011), conflict of interest (4053), option enrollment (5004), transportation (5005), student physical and vision requirements (5011), student insurance (5025), student discipline (5035), school wellness (5052), bed bugs (5066), emergency exclusion (6031), and reading instruction and intervention services (6036). That motion was moved by Jason Kloepping, seconded by Jennifer McConville, and the minutes record it as carrying with the same four ayes and no nays.
The board elected to table Policy 6040 (Prekindergarten/Preschool or Early Childhood Program) until the August board meeting; the minutes record that item as tabled for further consideration without additional detail on the reasons for postponement.
Why it matters: the adopted policies update operational, safety and student‑support rules used across the district — from how records and complaints are handled to nondiscrimination and discipline procedures. Tabling the prekindergarten policy leaves early childhood programming decisions pending until the board’s next regular meeting.
