Fire chief seeks grant to replace thermal imaging cameras; council approves application

Tuscaloosa City’s finance committee authorized the fire department to apply for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant to replace and expand its fleet of thermal imaging cameras, Fire Chief Bagents said.
"We've got thermal imaging cameras. These have usually got about a 10-year lifespan and we're getting pretty close to that on all the ones that we currently have," Chief Bagents said in presenting the request. He asked to apply for 27 cameras; the grant requires a 10% local match. The chief said the department currently has 21 cameras and that the replacement would cover frontline apparatus and provide extras for the training division.
Committee members asked whether drone technology could substitute for the cameras; Chief Bagents said drones are useful from the outside but cannot replace the initial on-scene thermal size-up performed by first-arriving crews. "From that first entry until that's where the thermal imaging camera comes in," he said, describing how cameras help identify heat and safe interior paths during a fire response.
The committee approved the application by voice vote. Chief Bagents said the local match will come from the fire department's operating account, which he indicated has budgeted funds for the match.
If awarded, the grant would fund equipment replacement and supply additional units for training drills; timing and vendor selection were not specified at the meeting.
