Town staff told the board that the preliminary program for a proposed new library has grown after consultants applied a circulation factor that increases required square footage.
"When that was all rolled out...we ballparked at 3,400 square feet," Richie said, describing the initial wish list from the library trustees. He added that Haley Ward's current program places the building at about 5,200 square feet once circulation (hallways and shared spaces) is accounted for.
Richie said the design team will prepare phased cost estimates so the town could deliver a functioning library and a community room in two stages depending on funding. He said the draft plan will go to the library committee at its next regular meeting in March and staff are preparing a handout for town meeting to explain the proposal.
Board members and staff noted the larger footprint is driven largely by space for community use rather than book stacks and emphasized the importance of clarifying phased delivery and costs to voters. No final funding decision or bond measure was taken at the meeting; the discussion focused on design scope and next steps for committee review.
