Tecumseh Local Board approves consent items and raises retired-teacher substitute pay to $120

The Tecumseh Local Board of Education approved its consent calendar and several administrative measures during its Oct. 15 regular meeting, and enacted a targeted pay increase for retired district teachers who substitute.
Board President Sue Anne Martin called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. and the board approved minutes for the Sept. 17 and Sept. 30 meetings on a 4-0 roll-call vote. The board then moved the personnel consent calendar, which included classified hires, substitute authorizations for the 2024–25 school year, resident educator mentors and a home-instruction appointment; the board approved multiple supplemental athletic coaching assignments for the high school and middle school.
The board accepted donations including a $2,000 gift from the New Carlisle Rotary Club. On the donations vote, Members Mills, Diller and Stafford voted aye and President Martin abstained. The board also rescinded Policy 5223 (Released Time for Religious Education) on a 3-1 vote; Member Jon Stafford was the lone nay.
In a separately moved financial action, the board approved the district’s September 2024 financial reports, acknowledged negative grant fund balances that will be covered by general fund balance, and approved a student-activity club for indoor track.
On compensation, the board voted unanimously (motion by Jon Stafford; second by Mr. Mills) to raise substitute pay for retired Tecumseh teachers to $120 per day, effective with the Nov. 20, 2024 pay. Administrators presented a cost analysis showing the district currently has four retired Tecumseh teachers working as substitutes and noted payroll obligations such as STRS, Medicare and workers' compensation that affect total employer costs.
The board also set its organizational meeting and the regular January meeting for Jan. 7, 2025, and approved continuing the district’s Swank Movie Licensing contract for $2,409 for the year.
The meeting recessed into executive session to discuss matters required to be kept confidential by law and security arrangements and reconvened before adjourning at 8:18 p.m.
