County OKs Abbott Energy contract for EV chargers at three county sites

Montgomery County’s Economic Development and Planning Committee approved forwarding a construction-services contract with Abbott Abbott Energy Inc. to the full legislature for installation of publicly accessible electric vehicle charging stations at county facilities.
Ken, a county project lead, said the work came from a competitive RFP with five proposals and that Abbott Abbott Energy offered the strongest value. Planned installations include four charging stations (up to eight ports) at the 20 Park Street county office building, up to six stations (as many as 12 ports) at the county courthouse site, and four stations (up to eight ports) at the Health and Human Services campus on Venter Road. The chargers are Type 2 and intended for public use; payments will be by credit card at the point of charging except when county vehicles charge, Ken said.
Committee members asked whether the chargers are fast chargers and about utility cost impacts; Ken said the units are Type 2 (not the fastest public DC fast chargers) and the county has no estimate yet for the added utility expense, noting placement decisions will depend on proximity to existing transformers and accessibility to power lines.
The county set a fast-track schedule with an expected construction completion target by the end of October; final parking layouts will be coordinated by DPW. The resolution to authorize the County Executive to sign the contract will proceed to the full board.
