St. Paul officials report utility equipment failures, set fire-station groundbreaking; police detail river rescue

Utilities Superintendent Helzer said the variable-frequency drive (VFD) at the wastewater treatment facility failed; Rutgen's Construction is working to resolve the issue. Helzer announced a groundbreaking for the new Fire Station scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024, and said Black Hills Energy will begin moving utility lines to the east side of the Middle Loup River Subdivision in August.
Chief of Police Howard told the council the department’s Chevy Impala needs an air-conditioning pump repair; because funding for the repair is not available in the current budget, the council will address the matter at its Aug. 5 meeting. Howard also reported that officers assisted the Howard County Sheriff’s Office with a water-rescue incident on July 11 at the Middle Loup River that resulted in two workers’ compensation claims; no major criminal incidents occurred during GCA Days weekend.
