Marquette County committee approves reorganization of zoning code, forwards five chapters to County Board

The Marquette County Planning and Zoning Committee voted unanimously Oct. 2 to rescind Chapter 70 of the county ordinances and reorganize zoning rules into five new chapters addressing administration, comprehensive zoning, shoreland and floodplain protections, and wireless facilities; all motions passed 5-0 and will be forwarded to the County Board.
The Marquette County Planning and Zoning Committee voted Oct. 2 to approve a reorganization of the county zoning ordinance and forward five new chapters to the County Board for consideration.
At a public hearing on proposed revisions to Chapter 70 — the county’s zoning ordinance — Planning & Zoning Administrator Jean Potter and Attorney Sean Griffen summarized the package, saying it rescinds Chapter 70 and splits zoning rules into Chapter 61 (Zoning Administration), Chapter 62 (Comprehensive Zoning), Chapter 63 (Shoreland Protection), Chapter 64 (Floodplain Protection) and Chapter 65 (Mobile Service Support Structures and Wireless Communication Facilities). Potter and Griffin told the committee the changes include formatting and grammar corrections, reorganized permit types and chapter-specific updates.
Potter said Chapter 61 renames Administrative Review Permits to Conditional Use Permits. She said Chapter 62 incorporates prior meeting edits and adds a new Section 4.0(M) to address salvage and junk material and inoperable motor vehicles. Chapter 63 carries forward county-specific shoreland language; Chapter 64 adopts model ordinance floodplain language; and Chapter 65 sets county-specific provisions for wireless facilities while noting that siting application requirements will be reviewed later to ensure state-regulation compliance.
Committee members moved and seconded a series of motions to approve each chapter and forward them to the County Board. Motions carried unanimously 5-0: Chapter 61 was moved by Dave Benson and seconded by John Bennett; Chapter 62 moved by Dave Benson and seconded by Kathy Jo Locke; Chapter 63 moved by John Bennett and seconded by Dave Krentz; Chapter 64 moved by John Bennett and seconded by Dave Benson; and Chapter 65 moved by Dave Benson and seconded by Kathy Jo Locke.
The committee did not record public opposition during the hearing. The forwarded chapters will next be considered by the County Board, where additional review or final approval may occur.
