Committee approves $97,000 to bring line power to Richards Pit after plant reliability issues

The Marquette County Highway Committee on Aug. 19 approved a plan to convert the Richards Pit plant from generator power to line power after staff described generator reliability problems during this year's production.
Brian Trebiatowski told the committee that some generators included with the plant package had been unreliable and that, after analysis, transitioning to line power made operational sense. He said bringing power to the lower floor of the pit would require boring STH 22 and the north wall of the pit and estimated the cost to be just over $57,000 for that work. Additional materials (control cabinet and transformer) and electrician labor were estimated at $30,000–$40,000, producing a combined estimate of about $97,000; the department intends to absorb the costs into the pit and plant cost pools.
Trebiatowski also said the plant is shut down for a control-house changeover with anticipated downtime of 4–6 weeks. The committee approved the transition to line power (motion by John Bennett; second by Dave Benson), with the minutes recording the motion as carried.
