Marquette County highway committee forwards 2026 budget to executive and finance

The Marquette County Highway Committee on Aug. 19 voted to forward the department’s proposed 2026 budget to the county Executive and Finance committees for further review. The motion to move the budget was made by Lance Achterberg and seconded by John Bennett; the record shows the motion carried.
Brian Trebiatowski, speaking for the Highway Department, reviewed July financials and year-to-date figures. He said RMA costs for July totaled $56,831, primarily for mowing and patrol supervision, leaving $115,478 remaining in the 2025 state budget; county costs for July were $1,007,875 with $247,626 listed as county maintenance (sealcoating, shouldering and drainage) and overlay maintenance of $756,903, leaving $671,081 remaining for 2025.
The committee discussed revenue and workload distribution before voting to forward the 2026 budget. Townships reported $119,668 in work for July (with $38,960 in labor), while villages and the city recorded $2,328 of work (with $354 in labor). Trebiatowski noted county work accounted for 60.64% of department labor while only 32.11% of labor expenses are charged to the county budget; the remainder is in the Highway Operational Fund.
The referral sends the proposed 2026 budget to Executive and Finance for their review and any further action. No roll-call vote totals were recorded in the meeting minutes.
