Southerland Public Schools board approves routine disbursements, two midterm graduations and a transportation hire

The board approved two student requests for midterm (December) graduation after a presentation by Mrs. McConnell, who said the students met credit requirements and have postsecondary plans; she recommended approval for the two candidates. The board voted by roll call to grant the midterm graduations.
Separately, the board voted to hire Ty Al as transportation director, citing an expanded fleet, driver shortages and increased grounds/custodial needs. The motion to appoint Ty Al passed on a roll-call vote; board members said the position is necessary to meet quarterly state inspection requirements and to manage increasing maintenance and staffing demands.
A separate motion to install a decorative covering on the school atrium window—intended to reduce a brief but intense morning glare—failed after debate about aesthetics, heritage and daylight. Administrators presented two options: a translucent etched/frosted design that would reduce light substantially but allow some daylight, or a more opaque material that would block more light. The motion to adopt the frosted option did not receive enough votes and was defeated by roll call.
The board set a budget workshop for 6 p.m., a budget hearing at 6:30 p.m. and a special meeting at 7 p.m. to consider tax-request and budget votes; members were asked to review materials circulated in advance. The next regular board meeting was set for Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
