The board authorized staff to submit a competitive North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) ESSER robotics grant (PRC 2011) for up to $75,000 to expand after‑school competitive robotics to more schools and to support existing programs. Mr Ellis told trustees the district previously ran the program and intends to expand participation to additional middle and high schools if awarded.
Because of the grant deadline, staff requested permission to submit the application by Dec. 31; the board approved submission and asked staff to return in January with the completed application and details of the program and budget. The motion to submit was approved by voice vote.
Mr Ellis said high school teams require more funding because of competition costs; staff named candidate schools for expansion and noted coaches and program carryover funds previously used to support activities.
