Gogebic County commissioners allocate state waste planning funds, approve ambulance training aid and routine audits

The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on June 10 approved a package of routine actions including grant authorizations, budget amendments and appointments during a 5:00 p.m. meeting at the county courthouse in Bessemer.
Vice-Chairman Matonich presided over the meeting. The board unanimously authorized the chairman to sign the FY2025-26 Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) Grant Agreement after Emergency Mgmt/911 Coordinator Heidi DeRosso described the grant and said the funds are used to assist first responders with covered costs.
Brendon Presnell, WUPPDR Materials Management Coordinator, told the board Gogebic County is eligible for 20% of the state’s second-round materials-management funds and recommended allocating the county’s share to contractual services. The board approved an amendment to the budget to record about $35,000 in additional revenue and the same amount in contractual-service expenditures; the motion carried on a roll call vote with Lorenson, Matonich, Yon and Cayer voting yes and Peterson, Wood and Siirila absent.
The board also approved the county’s financial reports and voted to pay claims, pre-paids and credit cards. A motion to accept a proposal extension from Gabridge & Company for the county’s financial statement audits was approved; the extension covers fiscal years ending Sept. 30, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2028.
Separately, the board approved a budget amendment increasing Emergency Management contractual services by $12,521, funded by a state emergency management revenue line, and unanimously granted Marenisco Township’s request for $17,024 to support emergency responder training contingent on receipt of proof that staff are certified.
On appointments, the board accepted Forestry and Parks Director Greg Ryskey’s recommendation and appointed Ronald Jacobson, P.S., as county representative for the remonumentation program effective July 1, 2026; it also reappointed John Matonich and Dan Peterson to the Forestry and Parks Commission with terms expiring June 30, 2030. The clerk was authorized to readvertise for an unfilled Department of Health and Human Services Board vacancy.
The meeting concluded with a brief public comment from Ashley Dennis, 4-H Program Coordinator, who updated commissioners on year-end 4-H activities. The board adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
Actions recorded in the minutes included motions to approve the May 13 minutes and the amended agenda, authorization of the HMEP grant signature, the materials-management budget amendment (about $35,000), approval of claims, the audit proposal extension, the $12,521 Emergency Management budget amendment, and the $17,024 Marenisco Township training payment contingent on certification.
