Two senior Bedford police officers to retire; Major Jeremy Bridges promoted to colonel

The City of Bedford accepted the retirements of two senior police officers and approved an internal promotion at its June 16 Board of Works and Safety meeting.

The police chief announced Major Brian Turpin notified the department of his intent to retire effective July 3, 2026. “Major Turpin has dedicated more than 36 years of service to the Bedford Police Department, the city of Bedford, and most recently as a school resource officer at Bedford Middle School for eight years,” the chief said. The board accepted Turpin’s retirement by voice vote.

The board also accepted the retirement of Colonel Joe Dice, who the chief said has served more than 38 years. The retirements were described as having “a lasting impact on the department, the community, and the officers with whom they have served.” Both retirements were accepted and recorded with effective dates at the end of July 3, 2026.

To fill the senior leadership vacancy, the board approved promoting Major Jeremy Bridges to the rank of colonel effective July 4, 2026. The chief said Bridges “has consistently demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, and strong commitment” and is qualified to assume the role. The motion to promote Bridges passed by voice vote; the transcript records one member as opposed.

The board did not record further deliberation on successor staffing beyond the promotion. The retirements and promotion will take effect in early July; the police department and city administration will complete required personnel and payroll updates before the effective dates.
