Staff updated the board that the automated weather observing system (AWOS) installation is complete and functional, and that pilots can call the new AWOS frequency. The apron rehabilitation contractor asked to delay work until the fall; staff agreed and will coordinate accommodations so the airport will not need to close during construction.
Staff said they will advertise a request for proposals for an airport consultant (a periodic FAA requirement), then form a committee of board members and staff to review proposals and select a consultant. The board also discussed notifying pilots and users of the new AWOS frequency and the location of a new noise-abatement placard.
On geotechnical work, staff described an on-going settlement test on the north side of the airport, reporting preliminary observations of about 45 inches of vertical loss in surveyed tests and explaining that the full collapse process takes 32–35 days of submersion in the test area; engineers will issue soil recommendations to guide future construction. Board members urged caution and recommended that any private paving or construction adjacent to airport property be reviewed by engineers in light of the test findings.
Board members called these results a positive example of coordinated geotechnical work; staff said consultants are working through permitting and scheduling and will report back as engineering recommendations are finalized.
Next steps: staff will share the AWOS frequency with users, issue the consultant RFP, schedule the apron rehabilitation for the fall, and circulate the geotechnical test results and engineering recommendations when available.
