Clerk of Court seeks central reception area; Buildings & Grounds cites load-bearing constraints and outlines maintenance updates

Clerk of Court Shari Rudolph told the Marquette County Property Committee that the courthouse layout creates safety and operational challenges and that efforts to address a central reception area have started and stopped since 2007. Rudolph asked the committee to consider options; she said that, if a full central reception setup cannot be achieved because of load-bearing wall issues, she would request a new doorway and counter to improve the current location.
Buildings & Grounds Superintendent Paul Van Treeck said the county worked with Potter Lawson on court security planning in 2015–2016 and that Phase 2 of that plan envisioned remodeling the second floor to move the Clerk of Court across from the judge’s office. Van Treeck described load-bearing wall constraints in the current office that complicate such a move. Supervisor Mary Walters asked for a tour of the office; the committee agreed to tour the Clerk of Court’s office at the May meeting and asked Van Treeck and Rudolph to gather options and cost estimates in the interim.
Van Treeck also provided the Buildings & Grounds monthly report. He said a garden shed was destroyed in a windstorm and did not meet the insurance deductible; salvageable materials were repurposed for fairgrounds ticket booths and remaining materials were recycled. Crews are updating LED lighting at the Highway Storage building; a check-valve failure briefly opened the dry system and flooded the system; and a curb, gutter and retaining-wall project will be complete soon with grass planting to follow after railing installation. Van Treeck said paperwork for congressionally directed spending had been submitted and the meeting with legislators is scheduled for May 1 in Fond du Lac.
Chair Lance Achterberg asked for an asset list showing maintenance needs and last-service dates; Van Treeck said the county uses the Akita Box system for asset tracking and recommended including electrical upgrades in the long-term planning list. The committee discussed convening the Long-Term Planning Committee as a subcommittee once strategic planning and borrowing timelines are clearer, with a likely mid-summer meeting to set project priorities.
