Cushing selectmen unanimously retain counsel in Fisher matter, enter executive session
Summary
On Jan. 11, 2016, the Cushing selectmen voted 3-0 to retain Attorney Kristen Collins to handle the Sue Fisher case, discussed an attorney inquiry about the case, and entered an executive session under 1 M.R.S.A. § 405(6)(A). The board also approved routine warrants, minutes and a check-disbursement policy.
The Cushing selectmen voted unanimously on Jan. 11, 2016, to retain Attorney Kristen Collins to handle a matter involving Sue Fisher and later entered an executive session under 1 M.R.S.A. § 405(6)(A) to discuss a personnel matter.
Selectman Daniel Staples made the motion to retain Collins, and Selectman Laurie Haynes seconded; the motion carried 3-0-0. Chairman Alton Grover also moved to approve the Town of Cushing policy regarding check disbursement prior to expenditure warrant approval, a motion seconded by Haynes and approved 3-0-0. Earlier in the meeting the board approved Warrants #52–#55 and #1–#2 on a 3-0-0 vote and voted to approve the minutes of the Dec. 28, 2015 meeting by the same tally.
Chairman Alton Grover reported receiving an email from Attorney William Dale noting an article in the Bangor News about the Fisher matter and asking whether the town needed his assistance or whether the town's insurance carrier had been contacted. The selectmen subsequently moved, 3-0-0, to enter executive session at 6:20 P.M.; the meeting returned to open session at 6:28 P.M.
Resident Robert Ellis said he was glad the board moved to retain counsel and reminded the selectmen that the town policy requires posting agenda items so the public is aware of matters to be considered. The meeting adjourned at 6:30 P.M.
The actions recorded at the meeting were routine approvals and the retention of counsel; no ordinance or budget measure was adopted.
