District updates high school pathways, cites 12 seniors with job offers and seeks new dual-credit and cybersecurity options

At the Committee of the Whole meeting May 13, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Michelle Erb introduced an update on Harlem High School’s College & Career Pathways. Jake Hubert told the committee the pathways are designed to provide hands-on experience and economic mobility so students can make informed postsecondary and career decisions.
Hubert highlighted that 12 seniors at a recent awards ceremony accepted job offers that resulted from internship placements, and he described current pathway areas that include agriculture and natural resources, graphic communications, mass communications, finance and business, human and public services, health sciences, information technology, and manufacturing/engineering/trades. He said the district maintains industry partnerships with Rock Valley College, Blackhawk Technical College and Beloit for dual enrollment and certifications, and that discussions are under way with McHenry County College about offering dual-credit for the construction pathway.
Staff acknowledged staffing and certification challenges for some pathway areas (for example, graphic arts) and said the district is working to expand offerings, including plans to pursue cybersecurity as a pathway and to increase early college credit opportunities to give students a head start on postsecondary credentials.
