Board approves 3-foot side-yard variance for Earleywine garage addition in Spirit Lake

At the April 27 meeting Vice Chairman Alex Oponski and the Board of Adjustment approved a variance for Rodney and Molly Earleywine to alter their home at 15355 213th Ave in Spirit Lake.
Rodney Earleywine told the board that he remodeled the home in 2018 and that, with retirement plans, he and his wife need additional storage and intend to make the home their permanent residence. Board members asked about the proposed addition; Douglas Westerman raised concerns about a large tree on the property and urged trimming to accommodate a second floor. Planning staff noted the parcel is a through lot on three sides and that the proposed structure would not meet requirements to serve as an accessory dwelling (electricity only, no plumbing). Earleywine said the project would include gutters and that runoff would flow toward the front lawn.
Westerman moved to approve a side-yard variance to allow a 3-foot setback where 25 feet is required (a 22-foot variance). Kirby Berhow seconded and the motion passed 4-0 (Clark, Oponski, Westerman, Berhow). No public comments were recorded. The approval allows the Earleywines to proceed subject to standard permitting and any plan-review requirements by county staff.
The board then approved other routine business and adjourned.
