Residents urge clearer Kickoff purpose, better outreach as Taskforce weighs improvements

Taskforce members and survey respondents told the TMRi Taskforce that the Kickoff meeting has not yet “found its place” in the Town Meeting Reimagined sequence and recommended changes to make it more useful and better attended.
Members noted that at the 2025 Kickoff several townspeople addressed their interests before small-group discussions began, which had the unintended effect of constraining later dialogue. Taskforce discussion focused on two possible roles for Kickoff: an orientation to how the budget is developed, which would help residents connect Kickoff learning to subsequent budget decisions; or a forum to surface one or two focused ‘pet issues’ or a public question for community discussion.
Survey respondents suggested practical fixes to boost participation and clarity: broaden outreach beyond Front Porch Forum, offer streaming and family-friendly meeting times, provide draft budgets and narrative summaries of “hot-button” items ahead of the meeting, and prepare amendment language in advance so proponents can hand it to the chair. Several respondents also asked for a short Q&A segment with pre-submitted questions and clearer time limits for speakers.
Respondents expressed mixed views about the reimagined format: while some praised the streamlined voting process and transparency, others said the three-meeting sequence fragmented discussion and reduced opportunities for the informal “Other Business” that characterized traditional in-person Town Meeting. Several comments explicitly favored returning to the traditional in-person model; others urged improvements to the current process to retain higher turnout.
Taskforce members acknowledged the tension between community discussion and efficiency. They recorded practical operational improvements — larger on-screen visuals, better sound for Selectboard microphones, and clearer moderator guidance — which they plan to include in recommendations for the Selectboard. The Taskforce scheduled follow-up meetings for May 18 and June 8 to refine proposed changes and outreach plans.
