Selectboard adopts penny‑rounding policy for cash payments as pennies become scarce

Town staff explained that banks are no longer supplying pennies and recommended a policy to handle cash transactions. The selectboard adopted the manager’s recommendation by unanimous vote. Under the policy, cash payments for water, sewer and taxes will be rounded to the nearest nickel and the difference will be posted as a credit to the payer's account. For motor-vehicle registrations staff will request payment by check or card when possible; if cash is required staff will work with residents who call ahead so transactions can be processed without requiring them to leave and mail a check.
The manager said the town will post signage at the front counter and on the town website to inform residents of the rounding practice. Board members acknowledged it will add daily accounting steps but said the approach aligns with federal and Maine guidance noted by staff.
