Residents, staff and council weigh xeriscape plan behind Main Street; approval contingent on funding

Ron Richmond and other downtown stakeholders urged a careful approach to planned xeriscape improvements behind Main Street buildings, asking the city to preserve grass and trees where possible and to place gravel near foundations to mitigate irrigation damage.
Colter Allen said the current plan removes grass where irrigation has damaged building foundations but that redesigned sprinkler systems could allow preservation of landscaped areas. Richmond also proposed improving the alleyway with seating and tables to create an inviting public space.
Councilman Jakob Howcroft moved to approve the xeriscape and alleyway improvements if funding can be located; Councilman D. Lynn Beesley seconded the motion, which passed with five affirmative council votes. Mayor Michael T. Olsen asked staff to prepare estimated project costs and to research available grants that might offset city expenditures.
Next steps: Parks and Public Works will prepare cost estimates and a grant search for council review; implementation depends on identifying funding.
