Gunnison planning commission schedules public hearing on park-strip landscaping requirement

City Administrator Dennis Marker presented proposed changes to Section 1710 and Municipal Code 9.40.040.6 to require developers or property owners to install and maintain landscape strips (park strips) between the curb and sidewalk. Marker told the commission that state law prevents the city from mandating grass (sod) but that the city can require "soft materials" in park strips and will maintain an approved street-tree species list to protect infrastructure and sidewalks.
Marker said the proposal aims to ensure consistent streetscape treatment and to protect trees and sidewalks from incompatible species. The amendment was scheduled for a public hearing at the commission's next meeting so the public can comment and staff can present draft code language.
Commissioners did not take final action; staff will post hearing notices and return with ordinance language for consideration.
