Goodhue County approves using radio tower repairs fund to cover Pine Island water tower overage

The Goodhue County Board of Commissioners voted 4-0 on June 2 to use the county’s Radio Tower Repairs Fund balance to cover an overage on a Pine Island water tower refurbish project.
The action followed a request by Chair Susan Betcher to pull the item from the consent agenda for questions about cost-effectiveness. “How can we make sure that we are getting the information we need so that we could do it in the most cost-effective way?” Betcher said during the discussion.
Captain Chad Steffen, who discussed technical and timing details with the board, said municipalities typically repair towers every 20 to 25 years and that Pine Island moved the project forward because of financial concerns. Steffen said the county is in communication with the city, but lead time for tower work is about six months and the county’s Emergency Communications vehicle could not serve as a tower site.
Commissioner Greseth moved to approve using the Radio Tower Repairs Fund balance for the Pine Island water tower refurbish capital plan overage; Commissioner Flanders seconded the motion, which carried 4-0.
The approval was taken as part of the consent agenda after the brief discussion. The county will proceed with the funding adjustment and continue coordination with Pine Island on scheduling and procurement.
