Council approves Project Canopy arborist contract; grant will fund planting of 40 trees

The Pittsfield council voted Dec. 16 to accept the recommended bid for the Project Canopy grant program and authorized staff to proceed with the arborist contract and related work.
Town Manager Jack summarized the procurement: three bids were received; one submission provided a comprehensive proposal including an assessment and an estimate for the assessment portion of approximately $16,000. Jack said the project’s larger budget—about $60,000 in grant funding—primarily covers planting about 40 new trees, while the arborist contract covers an assessment and pruning of about 50 trees to improve the downtown canopy.
Councilors discussed the scope, noting the town already has a tree inventory and that the arborist assessment would prioritize 50 trees for health-based pruning. Staff confirmed the planting work would be procured separately and that the grant covers the majority of planting expenses.
The council voted to adopt resolution 25-130 and accept the recommended contractor as presented in the packet. The approved assessment and contract terms will allow staff to proceed with the inventory-based pruning and to finalize contracts for the planting phase.
