Town weighs filtration bids after tests find high TCE at 236 Central Avenue

Town code enforcement reported on Dec. 30 that groundwater tests at 236 Central Avenue showed trichloroethylene (TCE) levels well above acceptable limits and recommended the town solicit bids for an in-home filtration system.
Stan Hackett said tests of the dug well at the property found TCE concentrations "10 times higher" than acceptable limits and that the homeowner currently receives bottled water deliveries. He described a proposed filtration design that includes two pressurized tanks and a charcoal filter to remove TCE and said the town had vendor contacts and design specifications ready to go.
Hackett asked for authority to put the filtration system installation out to bid and said he could manage the bidding process and provide technical review of proposals. Board members indicated support for soliciting bids and for reviewing them when they arrive in January. One board member summarized the next step: the town will put the work out to bid and return the results for a formal award.
The board did not finalize a contract at the Dec. 30 meeting. The code enforcement office said the town would target mid-January to receive bid responses so the board could consider award and next steps for providing safe water to the household while any longer remediation is planned.
