Superintendent reports summer-school gains, new high school progress; attorney updates lease talks

Superintendent Dr. Bennett updated the board on summer-school operations and building progress at the new DeSoto High School, and board attorney J. Cole Brewer provided a legal update.
Dr. Bennett said 62 third graders were working toward a concordant score this week that would help promotion to the next grade, and he highlighted a senior who overcame adversity and is expected to receive a diploma at an upcoming summer ceremony. He said the district hopes to get "six or seven more" seniors across the finish line before summer ends and that a summer graduation will be held for those students.
Dr. Bennett also noted continued work on the new high school, invited district stakeholders to tour the site, and said facilities and construction steps are reaching visible milestones.
Separately, Mr. Brewer reported ongoing lease negotiations with Onetop Housing and said he expected a draft lease for review. He also said the district's attorney services would be assigned back to "J. Cole Brewer PA" from the previous firm 'BKM' and that he was willing to continue representing the district.
Board members praised the insurance committee's recent work on potential cost savings — including clinic and fleet initiatives — and said they will present details at a future board meeting after further work from the committee.
