Police chief reports failed contact with new hire; council agrees to continue search for one part-time officer

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate recently approved for hire has not responded to contact attempts and the chief assumes the person is no longer interested. He said he will reach out to the consortium (there are 32 candidates on the list), check with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and send out letters to applicants.
Pernice said he would ultimately like to hire two part-time officers but noted the council had only approved one position. After the update, the council agreed to continue searching for one part-time officer to fill the approved vacancy.
The announcement came as part of routine department reports; no formal vote or personnel action was taken at the meeting. The council did not specify a timeline for the recruitment steps Pernice described.
