The Sarasota County School Board voted on June 16 to advertise the 2026–27 student code of conduct for a 28‑day public comment period and approved several new and revised job descriptions as part of a broader reorganization.
Superintendent Conner described the code as a district framework for expectations and progressive discipline and said the board was being asked only to advertise the policy, with final adoption to come after the public comment period. He explained the code includes a disciplinary matrix intended to produce more consistent responses across schools and said administrators are trained in investigative steps to determine who is responsible when a prohibited activity, such as vaping, involves a group.
“There's a matrix… designed based on the number of offenses to progressively move students toward heavier consequences,” Conner said, and added that administrators use investigatory processes to distinguish the actor from bystanders in a group. Board members asked Conner to present further clarifications when the board considers final adoption.
On personnel and structure, Conner outlined organizational‑chart changes and said the district has cut about 22% of its district‑administrator positions (roughly 36 roles) since summer 2025 while adjusting school‑based administration ahead of reopening and the new Wellman Park school. The board approved the job descriptions unanimously.
Board members emphasized the need for clear communication to families about the code of conduct and for consistent application across campuses. The board scheduled the student‑code adoption for a future regular meeting after the public comment period.
