District staff reported steady participation in its targeted summer enrichment program and outlined ongoing hiring needs ahead of the fall.
Mike, presenting the superintendent’s summer enrichment update, said the program serves K–8 students identified through migrant education and English‑learner programs, averaging about 120 students per day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include literacy and math instruction plus science, social studies, PE and music; staff showed examples of hands-on projects and student artwork. Mike said the final day of the program this week will include a community pet day for students.
HR director Sarah Hopkins told the board the district has multiple vacancies following an early retirement incentive and ongoing turnover. Packet numbers discussed in the meeting noted openings across grade bands and specialties: four elementary teacher openings, (music interview pending), at the secondary level openings included multiple math, special education, science, social studies and ELL positions. The district will host an open interview event on June 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. where candidates can be interviewed on the spot for teaching and support positions (food service, custodial, substitutes, paraprofessionals).
Board members discussed billing questions and thanked HR staff for outreach work. Administration said it will continue recruitment efforts with signing bonuses for harder-to-fill positions and partnerships with local colleges.
The board agreed to schedule a workshop ahead of the July 20 meeting to review data and refine priorities.
