Prairie Grove council hears updates on streets, speed management and fire-station generator pricing

Prairie Grove council members used their July 15 meeting to hear departmental updates on sanitation staffing, street repairs, traffic-calming requests and a new generator quote for the fire station.
Sanitation staff said a driver vacancy will be filled by an internal transfer and recruitment is underway to backfill remaining openings. Street department staff (Chuck) reported work on sidewalks and street cuts and asked residents to report open cuts so crews or franchise utilities can fix them.
Staff said they had negotiated with owners of a narrow parcel needed to connect Front Street to the bypass highway; owners quoted roughly $25,000 per acre and the city’s initial offer was $20,000 per acre. Staff recommended not purchasing now because the connection is likely to be constructed by a future developer and the city’s M Street fund could be committed elsewhere.
Residents requested speed cushions on Bush Street, supplying speed data and photographs. Council discussed pros and cons of physical speed cushions and the city’s mobile radar signage program. One council member noted radar signs produce data used to validate complaints and to target enforcement, while another cautioned speed cushions can create unintended hazards and neighborhood disputes.
The mayor announced a new price quote for a fire-station generator: an updated contractor quote of about $26,000 versus an earlier estimate in the ‘‘50 some thousand’’ range. Staff said the fire department has bond money available to purchase the generator and that the purchase would be within bidding limits.
No formal council action was required on the speed requests at the meeting; staff will continue investigations and report back with options.
