Galena board approves cell-phone policy, purchases and insurance packages; accepts $10,000 donation

The Galena City School District Board of Education unanimously approved a packet of routine items including a revised cell-phone policy, a $10,000 donation and several purchases, and authorized insurance renewals and student loans.
On a roll-call vote the board approved the new cell-phone policy, which tightens rules for student devices and will be included in the 2026–27 parent-student handbook; the board and staff plan an open house/town-hall to explain the changes to families prior to the school year.
The board accepted a $10,000 donation from CoBank and Atkins Energy to buy a welding fabrication table for the district's new shop. The district moved and seconded acceptance of the donation and then approved a separate motion to purchase the welding table for metals classes.
Other procurement approvals included purchase of track equipment (quotes from Monosel Sports) and appliances for life-skills and family and consumer-science (FACS) classrooms, with board members noting the value of local vendor service for appliance maintenance.
On insurance matters the board approved a workers'compensation arrangement through Conklin and Associates for $27,977 (reported as about $5,000 less than the prior year) and a combined property, liability, auto and cyber package of $116,140 for fiscal 2027, also through Conklin and Associates.
The board approved Souse loans (up to $1,000 each) for three students who met eligibility requirements: Sydney Answeller, Cooper Answeller and Roman Romer. The motion carried with one abstention recorded in the roll call.
All motions described above were made, seconded and passed by roll call; no item was tabled or failed. The board adjourned after completing the agenda.
