Galena board hears construction timeline; students honored for state track performances

The board recognized four middle-school athletes who advanced to state track competition: Kylie Sykes (shot put), Evelyn Miller (800 meters), Miles Norman (discus) and Levi Kaiser (shot put and discus). A presenter congratulated the students and noted personal records and placings at state, saying the performances were among the highest the district has seen.
Facilities staff described remaining work on the high school site. "They will surface that somewhere between July 6th and July 13th," said Tim, the staff member answering questions about the schedule. He said the press box and bleacher footings should be completed by mid-July and that the new lighting will be tested once conditions allow. Tim also told the board that acoustical baffles had been installed in the media center and that terrazzo/concrete floor work and blacktop at GEMS are underway.
Board members were advised that asbestos abatement is set to start the week of June 29, with high-school deconstruction expected to follow after abatement is complete. The plan will temporarily remove about 25–30 parking spaces from the lower high school lot; staff recommended using gym parking and covered walkways as short-term alternatives.
The board also noted donor support for interior finishes: Bill and Donna Miller have pledged to sponsor a six-by-nine-foot school logo installation at the main entrance, and Marty and Denise Johnson are backing a proposed historical timeline exhibit tracing local educational history.
The meeting closed after routine business; the board will return in July with further construction updates and implementation details for the fall opening.
