Hyannis Area Schools board approves $254,458 in disbursements, adopts new elementary social studies curriculum and accepts resignation

The Hyannis Area Schools Board of Education on June 15 approved routine financial disbursements totaling $254,458.24 and a series of personnel and governance actions at its regular meeting in the high school library.

The board voted, on a motion by Chris Cover, Secretary, seconded by Kevin Anderson, Treasurer, to approve the consent agenda that included the May 11, 2026 minutes and the listed bills and claims: general fund $254,458.24; lunch fund $4,595.36; activity fund $12,941.02; and special building fund $4,864.12. The motion passed with five ayes: Mark Vinton (Aye), Clint Taylor (Absent), Chris Cover (Aye), Kevin Anderson (Aye), Bob Meester (Aye), and Justin Vinton (Aye).

The board approved personnel changes including acceptance of the resignation of Amanda Rath and release from her 2026–2027 contract (motion by Chris Cover, second by Bob Meester). The board also approved extra‑duty assignments for the 2026–2027 school year and appointed Payton Gorwill and Payton Nolting as long‑term substitute teachers for 2026–2027 (motion by Cover, second by Meester). Those personnel motions passed by the same 5–0 recorded vote with Clint Taylor absent.

On curriculum, the board approved a three‑year adoption of Savvas Learning Company’s elementary social studies curriculum to better align instruction with Nebraska State Standards, at a three‑year total cost of $10,205.90 (motion by Mark Vinton, second by Kevin Anderson). The motion passed unanimously among those present.

Governance actions included approval of Hyannis Area Schools policies as the district’s governing framework for 2026–2027 and multiple annual policy reviews. The board conducted an annual hearing on Policy 5018 (Parental Involvement Policy), entering the hearing at 6:31 PM and concluding at 6:35 PM, and voted to retain the current Policy 5018 as written (motion by Bob Meester, second by Kevin Anderson). The board also completed annual reviews of Policies 5045 (Student Fees), 5054 (Bullying), 4031 (Teacher Evaluation), 5001 (Attendance), 6020 (Multicultural Education) and others listed in the minutes. The board approved required policy revisions recommended by KSB School Law and read several policies in first reading (6038, 6046, 3061, 4065).

Board discussion also noted several pending state bills—LB 803 (joint budget hearing attendance beginning July 2027), LB 824 (NPERS 120‑day retirement rule change) and LB 940 (removal of certain color additives from school lunches beginning August 2027)—and the possible need for a board member to attend a joint budget hearing with village and county entities beginning July 2027. Those items were discussion only; no formal motions on the bills were recorded.

The minutes include a full, itemized warrants list and vendor disbursements supporting the general fund total of $254,458.24.
