Dana Point honors beach rescuer and OCFA urges water‑safety precautions

The Dana Point City Council recognized a local resident, identified as Lucas, on June 16 after he described jumping from a jetty at a surf contest to rescue a child and assist the child's father.
Lucas told the council he heard a scream, saw the child’s head bobbing and immediately entered the water fully clothed to effect the rescue. The mayor presented Lucas with a certificate while the council and audience applauded.
Following the recognition, the Orange County Fire Authority chief addressed the council with a drowning‑prevention message for summer. The chief said Orange County recorded 95 drownings last year, urged active adult supervision (the ‘A’ of the ABCs), use of pool barriers, swim lessons and CPR training for immediate response. He emphasized that many rescues are performed by nearby surfers or bystanders and urged parents and teenagers to watch one another at pools and beaches.
The ceremony combined community recognition with a timely safety reminder as the city heads into peak summer beach season.
