City staff outlined operational changes at the Canal Winchester pool during the April 20 work session to support the JRD swim team and provide a senior swim hour.
Amanda Jackson said the pool’s regular operating hours will change to 12:00–7:00 p.m. this summer (previously 12:00–8:00) so the swim team can use the pool at "last whistle at 6:45" for morning practices. She said practice scheduling previously required shutting down part of the competition pool in the evenings; the new schedule gives the team exclusive pool access for practices. Jackson said the swim team typically involves about 100 children and that the city worked with the JRD coaches to adjust schedules.
Jackson said Columbus Pool Management will offer a morning senior swim hour, likely 10:45–11:45 a.m., Monday through Thursday for those age 60 and over. The city also plans one Wednesday swim meet that will close the pool to the public at 4:00 p.m. to host the event.
A key operational change: day-pass visitors who do not hold memberships must be pre-registered and verified at City Hall (during business hours or at special pool open-house events) and photographed; after that one-time process, they may visit during the season without repeat registration. Jackson said the final calendar was being finalized and asked for patience during the initial weeks. "This summer is going to be very different at the pool," she said. "The next five weeks are going to be absolute chaos while we try to implement all this new stuff. We just ask for a little bit of patience and a little bit of grace as we work through this new process."
