The Canal Winchester Planning and Zoning Commission on April 13, 2026 approved two related actions for a proposed Violet Township Fire Department substation at 9669 Bucy Road: a variance (VA26009) to widen one access drive from the standard 25 feet to as much as 45 feet to allow simultaneous emergency vehicle egress, and a recommendation that the amended final development plan (FDP-26-00001) be forwarded to city council with the condition that the applicant submit a signage plan for later review.
Staff said the fire department reassessed its site design after prior approvals and requested the wider drive to match other stations and improve safety and response times. Staff recommended VA26009 and noted the revised drawings also added a public waterline easement and adjusted private electric tie-in locations; the widened access drive was incorporated into the amended FDP.
Commissioners closed the public hearings and voted unanimously to approve the variance and to forward the amended final development plan to city council with the stated condition. Staff noted the access-drive change is intended to improve emergency operations and that the wider drive mirrors design choices at other local stations.
