Southampton adopts redevelopment plan for former Stokes Cannery, committee says developer must handle surveys

The Southampton Township Committee on May 19 unanimously adopted Ordinance 2026-03, a redevelopment plan for the non‑condemnation area known as the Stokes Cannery property (Block 903, Lot 21).
Patrick VanBernum of Environmental Resolutions, Inc., summarized minor edits to the plan on pages 11 and 15, saying the changes shift the concept toward family‑oriented housing. Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Rossell moved to adopt the ordinance; the motion passed on roll call with Committeemen Harrison and Heston, Deputy Mayor Rossell, Committeeman Young and Mayor William Raftery voting in the affirmative.
During public comment, Derek Delvichio asked whether surveys for water tables or protected species had been completed for the site. Administrator Brandon Umba replied that environmental surveys would be the developer’s responsibility and emphasized that the ordinance before the Committee is a concept plan adoption rather than final site approvals.
The ordinance’s adoption allows the township and developer to proceed under the adopted redevelopment framework; subsequent approvals, permits and required surveys will be addressed as part of later development filings and regulatory reviews.
