The council approved Resolution 4733‑26 to award Invitation to Bid 26‑17 to KIB Construction Corporation for renovation of three bathrooms at Fire Station 48. Staff described the work as full renovations — replacing vanities, mirrors, tile, reconfiguring showers and increasing ADA accessibility — including an add‑on to convert showers to zero‑entry for two non‑ADA showers.
Staff and facilities representatives explained the zero‑entry change is tied to reworking shower pans and extending interior walls to make the stalls usable, safer for maintenance and easier for firefighters to decontaminate after incidents. A facilities representative said the department provides specialized soap to help remove carcinogens after structure fires and that the more accessible showers improve functionality for crew members who must clean quickly.
Councilmember Slayton questioned the extra cost for a zero‑entry conversion; staff said the add‑on reflects the work to replace the shower pan and to remove the step threshold. The bid amount presented in the staff report was clarified during the meeting as $65,700 (staff corrected an earlier figure). Council debated the necessity of the zero‑entry upgrade but ultimately approved the award.
What happens next: The city will execute the construction contract and schedule work; staff will coordinate with the fire department to minimize service disruption during renovations.
