Rome group assigns chapters for resource book, plans shoreline best-practices flyers

At its May 6 meeting the Rome Lake Water Quality Association organized a resource book and agreed to produce and distribute shoreline best-practices materials to residents and local outlets.
Cynthia Esthimer brought a box of resource material and displayed a shoreline best-practices flyer previously distributed at the town meeting. The group agreed to create a second flyer focused on trees and to ask the town CEO to keep a supply of different topic flyers in the CEO’s office for public pickup. Cynthia suggested wider distribution via the Belgrade Lakes Region newsletter and North Pond newsletter (Eric Brown).
Members divided responsibilities for a resource book: Michelle Stafford (area demographics; tourism; septic), Larry Stafford (natural resource facts; land conservation; erosion control), Pete Kallin (shoreline zoning; phosphorus/algae), Melissa Gaspar (courtesy boat inspections), Emilie van Eeghen (basic lake dos/don’ts; LakeSmart; road association contacts), and Lynn (area conservation resources). The group discussed whether to publish a hard-copy booklet or an online resource and who would maintain updates.
The meeting also reviewed regulatory highlights discussed at a recent ABCs of Shoreline Zoning workshop: tree-cutting permit distances (75 feet from streams and wetlands; 250 feet from lake shore), houseboats are forbidden, and limits on rebuilding or expanding structures (replacement up to 50% of structure value in one year; lifetime expansion limit of 30% determined by historical imagery). The association did not enact regulatory changes but documented these clarifications for outreach materials.
Members plan to draft the tree-management flyer and determine distribution logistics before the next meeting on June 10.
