Rome Lake group finds gaps in septic inspection records, plans town outreach

The Rome Lake Water Quality Association on May 6 reported progress reconciling septic records and agreed to seek town help notifying owners without required inspection reports.
The association’s septic committee said it has reviewed approximately 980 of an estimated 1,265 records after locating and filing missing documents. The committee noted it has found very few inspection reports required from new owners under state law, prompting members to pursue outreach to improve compliance.
Michelle Stafford said she will coordinate with Stuart Cole to ensure the association’s intern uses the association’s updated file rather than an older version. Association members asked that inspection reports be filed with the town CEO’s office and proposed that the CEO send a respectful compliance notice — for example, asking owners to comply within 60 days. The group said it will work with the Select Board to finalize the letter.
The committee’s record reconciliation is intended to identify properties lacking required inspections and to produce a clear list the town can use for outreach. No enforcement action was recorded at the meeting; members described the planned CEO letter as an informational compliance request.
Next steps include completing the intern’s review using the association’s current files and drafting the Select Board letter for CEO distribution. The association scheduled its next meeting for June 10 at 4:00 p.m.
