Zeeland BPW designates $2.356 million in PFAS settlement funds for potential future treatment

The Zeeland Board of Public Works voted Nov. 11 to designate its allocation from a PFAS class-action settlement as restricted funds for potential future PFAS treatment costs.
ACM/Finance Director Plockmeyer told the board that Zeeland BPW has received $1,482,983.73 to date and expects a likely additional payment of $873,248.53 in spring 2026, for a projected total of $2,356,232.26. Staff recommended creating an internal fund balance designation and a corresponding note in Zeeland BPW financial statements to commit the funds for PFAS treatment unless a future board takes formal action to reallocate them.
Plockmeyer said Zeeland currently has no PFAS-related issues in its water system and no planned PFAS-specific improvements, but the designation is a prudent precaution should future treatment or monitoring be required. The designation would allow the funds to accrue interest that could offset future expenses.
The board approved the recommendation; meeting minutes record the motion carried with "all voting aye." The designation does not itself authorize expenditure; any future spending would require subsequent board action.
