Brimfield trustees cancel July event, shift meeting dates as residents urge protection of emergency services funding

Brimfield Township trustees voted on June 16 to cancel the July 26 "Let's Glow Brimfield" event and to reschedule upcoming meetings after residents urged the board to protect emergency-services funding and pressed elected officials about past budget oversight.
Trustee Nicholas Coia called the special meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. and confirmed that Trustees Mike Kostensky and Sue Fields and Fiscal Officer John Dalziel were present. Coia opened with remarks thanking residents, neighboring areas, department heads and staff for participating and described the meeting as part of ongoing conversations about a recent building project.
During public comment, several residents warned against cutting funding for emergency services. "How did we get to this point?" asked Bill Andreson, who criticized past spending choices and recommended the township hire an accountant. Patti Harjung complimented the board and staff on completing the building project but said "emergency services are essential" and suggested cutting administrative spending, selling unused property or equipment, or launching fundraising instead of reducing emergency-services funding.
Tom Johnson criticized the township's financial oversight, calling the Auditor of State management letter for the 2021–2022 audit "a dumpster fire," and said he had met with the fiscal officer to better understand the budget. Bridget Turner pressed trustees about oversight during the construction project, asking who served as the liaison to the fire department, why budget limits were not enforced, and whether the contract with Rycon is complete.
After public comment, the board took two procedural motions. In Motion #2025-193, Trustee Mike Kostensky moved to cancel the Let's Glow Brimfield event scheduled for July 26, 2025; Trustee Sue Fields seconded. Votes recorded: Kostensky — yea; Fields — yea; Coia — yea. The motion passed.
In Motion #2025-194, Kostensky moved to change the June 24, 2025 meeting to Friday, June 27, 2025, and the July 9, 2025 meeting to July 8, 2025, both at 6:00 p.m.; Fields seconded. Votes recorded: Kostensky — yea; Fields — yea; Coia — yea. The motion passed.
Trustee Coia moved to adjourn at 9:44 a.m.; Trustee Kostensky seconded and the board voted unanimously to adjourn.
The meeting record notes that the Trustees of Brimfield Township approved the minutes as a true and accurate record of the proceedings.
