Council appoints Kristi DeVerney as city clerk; temporarily appoints city manager as deputy clerk

Zeeland City Council on Oct. 20 appointed Kristi DeVerney as City Clerk effective Oct. 21, 2025. Councilmember Kass moved the appointment, Councilmember Broersma seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
City Manager Tim Klunder described DeVerney's interim service to the city and recommended her for the permanent role; staff noted her experience assisting during recent unusual circumstances following the previous clerk's departure.
Council also confirmed a temporary appointment of City Manager Tim Klunder as a Deputy City Clerk so that city checks could be countersigned per Charter Section 10.12 while bank signatories are updated. Attorney Donkersloot advised this would be a short-term measure and the city intends to return co-signing authority to the City Clerk after signatories are changed by Council resolution.
