Cherry Valley council approves application for $15,000 Arkansas rural community grant to support park work

Cherry Valley officials voted to apply for a $15,000 Arkansas Rural Community grant to support park improvements tonight, agreeing to match the award with $15,000 in local sales-tax funds if the grant is awarded.
"This is the same grant program that we utilize for the fire department this previous year," Mayor Dennis Stevens said as the park committee presented a resolution authorizing the application. The park committee will decide how to allocate the combined $30,000 if the state award is successful.
Council members also discussed a separate walking-trail and ADA parking project that previously received a $219,240 award — reduced from a $250,000 request — and said the scope may need to be trimmed to fit the awarded amount. Members noted they will attend a webinar on April 21 to review program details and next steps.
The motion to approve the resolution to apply for the Arkansas Rural Community grant was moved, seconded and approved by the council.
Next steps: the park committee will finalize the local match and project scope and staff will submit the state grant application on the city’s behalf.
