Board hears updates on 'Energy Bus' program, Little Red historic status and student enrollment

At the Dec. 9 meeting, Board Member Debbie Gonzales updated members on the district's implementation of the Energy Bus program and presented information about pursuing historic designation for the Little Red school.
Gonzales said the Energy Bus work is aimed at building a positive school culture, stating, "Energy Bus is about creating a positive school culture climate," and reported that the district is ahead in implementing aspects of the program. She also noted the Little Red school's community impact and age, saying the building is in its 104th year and that, in her view, the school "qualifies for historical building status" and that there are no fees attached to that designation process according to her report.
Superintendent/Principal Ms. Romero gave a staff report summarizing second-quarter activities, including sports, Penguin Store sales and an upcoming holiday program; she said classroom walk-throughs and midyear benchmark testing are underway. Romero also recounted a November meeting with Senator Rosanna Gabaldon and Santa Cruz County leaders. Current enrollment was recorded in the minutes as 124 students.
Board members listed formal consideration of Little Red as a historic building as a future agenda item for formal approval. The board continues routine operations and will meet again on Jan. 13, 2026.
