Council approves CTC internet for splash pad, asks staff to seek lower price

Little Falls City Council on June 15 approved a staff recommendation to use CTC to provide internet service for the city's new splash pad at a one-time cost of $8,700 and a monthly fee of $100 to be charged to the park improvement fund.
Public works staff member Greg told the council CTC's quote covers fiber installation from nearby Potter Lane and that the one-time fee is driven primarily by the cost of extending fiber. "CTC provided us a quote of $8,700," he said. He noted FallsNet proposed an alternative at $4,800 but would require a roughly 4550-foot tower that the city would own and maintain.
Council members asked whether CTC could offer a better price given the city's existing relationship and customer base. Several members described the FallsNet tower option as cheaper upfront but potentially more costly over time because of fencing and maintenance obligations. The council approved the CTC contract after a motion by Mayor Zilka and a second by Council Member Hansen; members asked staff to return within two weeks with any additional discount CTC might offer.
Staff said the monthly $100 service fee will be paid from the park improvement fund and that the cameras and automatic door locks for the splash pad are covered by the building contract; the internet funding makes those systems operational.
