Willington committee schedules Sept. 30 green-energy event at library

The Willington Sustainability and Energy Committee on June 10 finalized plans to hold a community-focused green-energy event at the Willington Public Library on Sept. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. The committee said it will invite Sustainable CT and try to contact CT Green Bank and local installers to staff information stations on insulation, solar, heat pumps and batteries.
"I did book the community room...September 30th was the only evening that I could get," the Committee Chair said, urging the group to develop an agenda and outreach plan. Members agreed the program should help residents weigh options amid rising winter fuel costs and include neutral resources to compare offers.
The committee discussed inviting local companies and using neutral marketplaces such as EnergySage to help attendees get multiple quotes without endorsing a single vendor. A member explained EnergySage’s process: homeowners submit an electric bill and photos and receive multiple bids to compare pricing and reviews.
Committee members emphasized outreach to residents on fixed incomes and those who receive fuel assistance through HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program). "We should try to reach out to people who are on HEAP," the chair said, and asked a member to coordinate with social services for contacts.
Members also warned residents about aggressive door-to-door solar sales and discussed providing vendor-selection guidance rather than direct endorsements. The committee plans multiple stations covering topics such as insulation, solar, heat pumps and financing options and will follow up with Sustainable CT and CT Green Bank about participation.
Next steps: the committee will finalize an agenda, begin outreach to social services and prospective attendees, and follow up with invited organizations to confirm speakers and vendors for the Sept. 30 event.
