Tremont Select Board asks town manager to include $116,000 for ambulance service, approves a slate of FY26 nonprofit funding requests

The Tremont Select Board on Dec. 16, 2024 voted unanimously to ask the Town Manager to include several nonprofit funding requests in the town's proposed fiscal year 2026 budget, led by a recommendation of $116,000 for the Southwest Harbor–Tremont Ambulance Service.
Select Board member Kevin Buck moved the ambulance funding request and Select Board member McKenzie Jewett seconded the motion; it passed without dissent. Buck and Jewett also moved and seconded several of the other nonprofit funding requests the board advanced during the meeting.
Why it matters: The recommended allocations would appear in the Select Board’s budget guidance to the Town Manager and, if included in the proposed FY26 budget, would be considered during the town’s formal budget review process. The requests support emergency medical services, social services and local nonprofit programs that serve Tremont residents and neighboring communities.
Details of the requests the board asked the Town Manager to include in the FY26 budget: $116,000 for the Southwest Harbor–Tremont Ambulance Service; $30,000 for Harbor House; $3,000 for the MDI Campfire Coalition; $2,000 for Down East Horizons; $2,500 for Down East Community Partners; $3,500 for the Tremont Historical Society; $2,000 for the Mount Desert Nursing Association; $1,000 for Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County; $1,500 for Island Connections; $2,500 for the Bar Harbor Food Pantry; $2,500 for the Westside Food Pantry; $5,000 for Island Housing Trust; and $750 for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children). Each motion recorded in the minutes passed unanimously.
Routine business: Earlier in the meeting the board approved the Dec. 2, 2024 minutes and approved FY25 warrants #53–#57, and it accepted the July–November 2024 financial reports. Those motions also passed unanimously.
Additional notes: Town Manager Jesse Dunbar provided a verbal report on town employees' activities since the last meeting. The board confirmed its next regular meeting for Monday, Jan. 6, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. in the Town Office and adjourned at 5:52 p.m.
What the board will do next: These funding requests are recommendations for the manager’s proposed budget; inclusion in the final FY26 budget depends on the manager’s proposal, follow-up hearings and any subsequent votes by the Select Board.
