Superintendent Chrystal Reyes told the Santa Cruz Valley Union High School District Governing Board on Jan. 8 that the district had reopened to classes and many students were attempting to enroll, prompting the establishment of a waiting list.
Reyes reported current enrollment at 420 students and said the district is being selective about admitting out-of-district students, excluding those with disciplinary, academic or truancy issues. Boardmember Billy Brown asked about reasons for the influx; Reyes said many students seeking to enroll were deficient in credits after failing last semester.
The superintendent cited a facility-board walk-through estimate that the campus could hold roughly 690 students based purely on square footage but said she did not believe the district could practically accommodate that many students. Reyes and board members discussed classroom ratios, which she said average about 25 to 30 students per class. No policy action was taken at the meeting; the matter remains an operational issue for district administration.
The board noted the Calendar Committee will present a draft FY 2025–26 academic calendar at a future meeting and the audit team will present findings in February.
