Commissioners approve May 18 minutes, ask staff for vandalism report; staff updates on lighting, shoreline and events

The Cortland Parks and Recreation Commission approved the May 18 meeting minutes and requested staff prepare a report on vandalism and repair costs during its June 15 meeting.
A commissioner described frequent vandalism in restrooms and on park equipment and asked staff to quantify direct repair costs and staff time devoted to repairs. "It's costing the taxpayers quite a bit of money," the commissioner said; Adam Curico said staff will prepare a report with numbers and suggested accountability measures.
Adam also updated the commission on several recent and upcoming items: recent installations of two solar parking/area lights (Jewett House and the skate-park trail), ongoing staffing work to fill custodial roles, and an upcoming busy events weekend with the Coeur d'Alene event and Ironman, followed by a July 4 concert by Michael Kemp at the City Park bandshell.
Curico said the installed solar lights include programmable timers and cost roughly $8,000 each when including concrete bases and full installation. Commissioners discussed whether donors or the Parks Foundation might fund similar units where trenching for power is impractical, and whether programmable or push‑button controls could be used to limit court‑lighting runtimes for pickleball groups.
On shoreline erosion at Mill River Park, Curico said he had discussed the project with Will Osborne of Ignite, and that prior work by Phil Boyd had left the shoreline in need of repair; staff estimate the full scope could be close to $1 million and hope Ignite funding might reduce reliance on Parks capital and impact fees.
The commission announced its next regular meeting for Monday, July 20, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. and then voted to adjourn.
